I enjoyed reading this slim volume. Want to particularly praise "Ballon" and "Autophobia in the Anechoic Chamber." The work reminiscent of Robert Frost's work--same dependence upon rhyme. Unlike Frost, however, Albee's rhyme scheme too often seems forced and is too often a distraction. Where assonance and half-rhyme would serve as well the reader gets barraged by rhyme schemes--"space/trace/place/disgrace"(for example) that are too obvious and cloying. (I do not include in this criticism the poems, like "Everything Is a Poem," that use rhyme in an obvious manner to achieve humor.)Product details

Those who appreciate poetry will enjoy this book of 35 poems loosely centered around life, loss, rebirth and growth. It is an impressive debut work that conveys a maximum of emotions in an economy of words and paints pictures in the mind that go beyond the words on the page. Some folks see things not everybody can see and Mary is one of them - finding wisdom & meaning in both the mundane and the momentous moments of our days and revealing them to us in thought provoking and sometimes funny ways (because yes "reading poetry should be fun"). Another mark of good poetry is how the richness of a poem can not be comprehended in a single reading. I was pleasantly surprised to find different emotions forming and additional insights gleaned on subsequent readings of the poems. My favorite poems were "The Writer"; a poem that any artist struggling with their muse could relate to, "To Amsterdam"; the city of possibilities that has achieved such a miraculous prize, "A Detailed Description of a Secret Urge"; haven't you ever had that urge to walk up to a stranger?, "Hierarchy"; whose shoulders are your feet resting upon?, "Everything is a Poem"; when you examine the world closely enough, and "Snow"; a beautiful love letter to taking a break from the things you love to make things right with the ones you love.
