Carina McKay is an outsider. With one parent of royal blood, she's not nobility, yet not a servant either. The only comfort in her mundane existence is her love of Critons, the large fire-breathing creatures that protect the border of her homeland. But her destiny changes forever the day she catches the eye of King Marek Duncan. Marek's heart is closed to love. After an arranged marriage withers to a bitter end, he dedicates his energy to protecting his kingdom. Yet he's searching for something more--the Caller of Light, the one who summons Critons. Carina's beauty and willfulness intrigue Marek, and he's determined to have her. When his enemies try to come between them, he discovers just how much he will endure to protect her. Together, they can unlock a love that binds their souls, but only if they find the strength to follow their hearts.

This book started with so much promise, and ended horribly. The main character didn't grow or develop. Not even her powers, which she didn't discover, by the way, her lover told her about her own powers. No development at all.

The book sticks with sexist ideals of "purity" that almost gets the poor girl raped, and although the king does punish the man who nearly rapes her, there is no thought to questioning why the attempted rapist thought it would be ok to rape her, from a societal stand point. In fact, the underlying insinuation is that if she hadn't of been "pure", then the rape wouldn't have been such a bad thing.

At one point, the male protagonist takes off to go fight some border skirmish, telling our main character she can't come, even though the author wrote the female protagonist with years of training with a master fighter. This inconsistency really bugged me- he could have at least given her a better excuse besides the unspoken obvious one- she's a woman.

And here's the thing, the beginning of the book insinuated that women have some amount of power in society, considering they thought the main characters sister may be a "caller." Turns out a caller doesn't have any special ability beyond attracting the dragon-like creatures to her general vicinity, which the men folk can then claim and sell. By the end, I was sorely tired of this woman not only having no say in her life, but never trying to have a say in her own life.

This is a terrible romance, and even worse fantasy. I'm so disappointed.

....Was exactly what i felt. When an author can make their readers feel pain, love, sadness, jealousy, etc then that author did their job well. TJ Shaw did exactly just that and more. I felt as this omniscient being who witness and experienced everything. I cried when Carina should have cried but remained strong even though she wanted to. When i read this story i was reminded of an archetype, Cinderella. But instead of finding her missing slipper and marrying the prince, Carina discovers her past and future with her soul-mate, Marek (who is by the way King )
So if dragons, magic and finding true love is your thing then look no further for this book is one that i fell instantly in love with. I will be waiting eagerly for her next book to see what dangers lie in wait for Carina XP
5 out of 5 stars!! King Marek travels to a neighboring kingdom with plans to meet the other King's daughter and agree to marry her, even though he isn't very hopeful or even happy about getting married for again he does need an heir. However, his plans change as soon as he sees then meets Carina, deciding to take her as a mistress instead, setting them both on a path neither expected...

WOW!! I am in love with this intensely dynamic fast-paced novel! It was like a fantasy driven Cinderella romance with surprising twists the whole way through. I especially liked that even if some of the twists made Marek behave in a way I didn't like this novel’s fast-pace made it so you couldn't dwell on his dumb behavior that long as there was more action to get into.

Carina made this novel with her sweet ways and strong defiant courage. Yet, her being with Marek brought me back for more. Their connection is shown as being all-consuming but in a way where they both benefit and strengthen each other. I'm very interested in seeing what else will come their way and their relationship growing because of it.

On a different note, can I say, “oh how I HATE Sampson!” I knew from the beginning that I didn't like his attitude but after what he did all I can say is that I loath him. In addition, really I'm curious if his character could really be redeemed. Since through it all he kept saying that he honored Marek and thought of him as a brother. So, I wonder what his true personality is. My guess is he's either the person Marek trusted and just suddenly had something bad in his head happen to him to make him act as he did or a man who hid behind a kind mask for years just waiting for the right moment to act out.

The other person I didn't like---but as per the "Cinderella" type of storyline it was to be expected---was Carina's half-sister Marissa. Basically, she is vindictive with a capital "B."

Nevertheless, as I said before I loved this novel! Therefore, I HIGHLY recommend it to those looking for a thrilling paranormal fantasy romance!!

If you enjoy fairy tale adaptations, this might be a fantasy book you want to pick up. the beginning has the distinct feel of a fairy tale with the handsome, unassuming king come to look over the beautiful princess as a potential wife. there is even a clueless father and a wicked half sister. later the fantasy aspects to the story evolve. it is an exciting story full of trials and suspicions, but relatively little angst between marek and carina. marek is everything brave and bold you want in a fairytale hero and carina is a warrior princess worth having in a fight. i enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to the continuation of their story as vicious foes threaten their kingdom. the flying critons evoke this beauty and wonder that pervade the story. total enjoyment. Sorry for the short review. as you can tell, my keyboard is totally misbehaving and cannot display a capital letter for some reason.
